I went to Capitol Reef for the weekend. It was really nice but as I always mention, I’d rather have done it alone. My favorite moment was when I was able to go out on my own for an hour or so before everyone woke up.
I always love the look of bales of hay in the fields and I saw some on the way in. I drove back to that spot with the radio turned up. Rush’s ‘Finding my Way’ playing on the car stereo. I went walking down to the field in my flip flops, scraping my ankles on weeds and twigs because I neglected to bring proper shoes with me. I remember thinking that I was in my element, I felt happy and alive.
We had gone swimming, I had the hot tub to myself when a 6 or 7 year old kid with pale skin, dark hair and dark eyes entered and sat right across from me. He was staring at me and I tried to look away, but each time I looked over, he was still staring at me. I didn’t really know what to do so I asked him about his avengers shirt. I asked him who his favorite avenger was. He told me it was the Hulk or Captain America. I told him I thought the Hulk was funny. Then his brother joined the conversation. I told him “We were just talking Avengers.” He asked me, “What is your favorite snack?” I didn’t hear him so I asked him to repeat what he’d said. He said “you know, like cheese-it’s, what’s your favorite snack?” I said “Oh, cheese-it’s are good, but I really like doughnuts.” Their dad came over to either save them from me or save me from them. They were adorable.
Here are the photos from the trip.
Sounds like an adventure. It makes me want to be right there by your side. The way you describe it I felt like I was. Though being there with you would have been comforting.
I love you, sis.
